TAVI (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation)

What is TAVI (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation)?

TAVI, or Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation, is a minimally invasive procedure used to replace a diseased aortic valve without the need for open-heart surgery. A catheter is inserted through the femoral artery (or another access point) and guided to the heart, where a biological replacement valve is deployed inside the existing narrowed valve (aortic stenosis).

Why is TAVI Important?

Severe aortic stenosis restricts blood flow from the heart to the body, leading to chest pain, fainting, breathlessness, and heart failure. Left untreated, it carries a high risk of mortality.

TAVI is a life-saving option for patients who are at high risk for surgical valve replacement, offering similar long-term outcomes with less trauma and faster recovery. It allows patients to regain heart function and quality of life, especially those who are elderly or have other medical conditions that make surgery too risky.

✅ Key Benefits of TAVI

  • Provides effective treatment for severe aortic stenosis.

  • Minimally invasive – avoids the need for open-heart surgery.

  • Offers rapid symptom relief (breathlessness, chest pain, fatigue).

  • Reduces risk of heart failure and sudden cardiac death.

  • Shorter hospital stay and quicker recovery time.

  • Suitable for elderly and high-risk surgical patients.

  • Improves quality of life and life expectancy.

  • Safe and effective with outcomes comparable to surgical valve replacement.
